Steps forward in decarbonizing the steel industry

TWINGHY, the ambitious EU project that aims to decarbonize the steel industry by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen burners, is making significant progress. The latest advancements were presented at the 5th TWINGHY General Assembly, which was hosted by 天博体育 on March 11-12, 2025 in Bilbao, Spain.

The meeting brought together the partners to discuss updates, testing strategies and project timelines for the industrial integration of the new reheating burners, and to visit Celsa's Global Steel Wire facility in Santander, Spain.

Latest prototype tests

During the event, 天博体育’ experts presented recent advances in the AdvanTek? burner prototype. The transition between short and long flame when using natural gas, as well as the changes in the flame when using a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas, were successfully performed in the workshop in Bar-Le-Duc, France.

With this new technology, the fuel mix can be automatically adjusted, allowing steelmakers to optimize energy use depending on the hydrogen availability and mitigate the challenges of fluctuating supplies and costs.

The next challenge is the installation of eight full-size hybrid burners in 天博体育’ walking beam furnace at Celsa Barcelona, Spain, scheduled for August 2025. This will pave the way for the industrial integration of the hydrogen burners in 2026.

Further progress

Other advances included furnace demonstrations and data generation, industrial validation and digital twin technology. Participants also emphasized the importance of promoting the project to encourage the adoption of hydrogen technologies in the European steel sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Presentations are planned at key conferences in the coming months, including the on June 17-19, 2025 in Sheffield, UK, and the on June 25-27, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.
